Transformers DOTM: Decepticon Vortex (Takara Tomy)
QUICK INFO:
Name: Decepticon Vortex (DD-06)
Line: Transformers Dark of the Moon (Takara Tomy)
MSRP: unknown (yen)
Year: 2011
Decepticon Vortex is a repaint/retool of the Hunt for the Decepticons Tomahawk. This was one of the better new molds released in the HFTD line so I was thrilled to see it being reused. You may have also noticed that Vortex sports a new head sculpt as well. The MechTech gimmick is present as well, but we'll look at that later. Most of the Japanese versions of the DOTM toys come packaged with a type of gaming card. Not sure how all of that works, but as a card collector it is a nice bonus.

Even though Vortex ranks in with a 10 in intelligence one may not know that based on his simple bio. To me the bio makes him out to be...well, stupid. Another carry over from G1 Vortex is that his gun isn't just any gun...it's a glue gun! I love when they pay attention to the small details such as this.

Vortex is a beautiful shade of gray with splashes of purple and turquoise. I'm not sure what real life helicopter he is modeled after, but it is one of the more realistic combat helicopters I've seen used in the Transformers line recently. The plastic used for the propellers is fairly rigid letting them spin freely. Right out of the package the propellers are straight and stiff and I hope they stay that way. I hate saggy propellers!

The designers did a pretty good job hiding a lot of the robot kibble. You can see two ports underneath the "wings" on each side. Tomahawk came with 2 missile launchers. Vortex only has his MechTech glue gun which can be attached in either of these ports.
MSRP: unknown (yen)
Year: 2011
Bio:
Vortex is the aerial soldier of Decepticon. As he has ruthless and brutal nature, his ultimate pleasure is the chop up the Autobot he captures.
Strength: 4 Intelligence: 9 Speed: 6 Endurance: 5
Rank: 6 Courage: 7 Fireblast: 7 Skill: 8
Vortex is one of two exclusive Dark of the Moon deluxe figures (Air Raid was the other) that was announced for the Japanese market only. When images first surfaced on the internet a lot of people immediately spotted the G1 Combaticon Vortex resemblance. Most online retailers quickly sold out their pre-orders shortly after they went live. Is it worth tracking this figure down? Read on...

I love the robot mode and how well all of the colors come together. The helicopter's tail fins form a nice bladed weapon mounted on his right forearm.
The MechTech glue gun is OK. I'm not a huge fan of the gimmick, but at least the weapon works better than the last one I got (Walmart exclusive Optimus Prime deluxe). When you pull back the lever the sides of the gun extend to make the gun larger. The lever sadly doesn't lock into place however. Boo.
Armed and ready!
The included card is part of some type of collectible card game. Most of the DOTM toys in Japan come packaged with an exclusive card. I think there is a stand alone card game as well.
Included with the card is a clear translucent overlay with the MechTech weapon. It reminds me of the smaller cards that came packaged with the Iron Man 2 action figures.
Lay the translucent piece over the card and now your Transformer is armed with that MechTech weapon. The instructions show you can use this overlay on any character's card.
Dark of the Moon on the movie front was awesome. Hands down the best of the trilogy. On the toy front I've been impressed with a few, but underwhelmed overall. While there are a few jewels to be had most of the domestically released toys just aren't worth my hard earned money. Vortex however is an exception. I jumped on one of those early pre-orders from the fine folks at Captured Prey and I don't regret my purchase what so ever. This figure is fantastic...whether you plan to display him on your Classics/Generations Decepticon shelf or as your first DOTM toy. Don't let the movie packaging throw you off. It's a great toy that just happens to be stuck in movie-verse packaging. If you can score him for $30-35 pull the trigger. I don't know how readily available he'll be long term so if you have the chance to pick him up do it.

Burger King Transformers Dark of the Moon Flip-Outs
Fast food and Hollywood always seem to be intertwined when summer rolls around and this year is no different. The latest live action Transformers flick has hit theaters this week and so has the latest promotion at Burger King.
Fast food promotional toys and Transformers have never meshed well in my opinion outside of the first McDonald's Beast Wars promo in the mid 90's (ok, some of the toys sucked, but some were cool). When I first heard the news about these new DOTM BK Flip-Outs I quickly discounted the idea and moved on. Running short on cash and hungry I hit up the drive-thru and got me a Big Kids Meal so I could see first hand what these toys were like.

Running short on cash and hungry I hit up the drive-thru and got me a Big Kids Meal so I could see first hand what these toys were like.
Right out of the bag I wasn't sure what to think. I was a little surprised to see the level of detail sculpted into this large floating head. They did a good job capturing the movie likeness of the Autobot weapons expert Ironhide.
The gimmick here if you will is that the head splits open to reveal a small body inside...a la Pretenders from the Generation 1 age! Ok, now I'm hooked on these. I didn't bother to look at the included "instructions", but I did notice the small gray button on the body.
Once the body is folded underneath the large head you have your "transformed" robot. Just like I noticed the small gray button on the robot's back I noticed the little camera like lens on the front. I tried holding it up to the light to see if I could see anything. Nothing. I pushed the button. Nothing. I saw a small black switch on the back beside the button...but it didn't want to see to do anything. So I took a peek at the instructions and found that the switch has to be flipped to the "on" position by moving it up. When you press the button you now get a Batman like symbol shining on the wall!
It was really hard to get a good picture, but as you can see it shines a red Autobot symbol on whatever you aim the robot at! I had no idea these Flip-Out toys even had this feature. I'm still unsure if all of the toys do this or if each toy has its own unique gimmick.
These little figures have a Japanese feel to them with the whole super deformed vibe. There have been some really BAD Transformers related fast food premiums over the years, but these seem to buck that trend. They almost look like little bobble heads. I'm not going to go crazy and put thousands and thousands of calories into my body to pick up more of these, but I wouldn't mind having Optimus and Shockwave. If you're hungry and are planning on picking up a burger then why not hit up BK and grab one of these. At least it'll make a nice desk ornament for your office.

Transformers DOTM Mini-Con "Dinobots"
Today I bring you the latest Dark of the Moon exclusive offering in the form of "new" Mini-Cons! Before I start I have a confession. I'm a Mini-Con whore. I love these little TFs. I've got a butt load already and I have a hard time resisting buying more...even if I already own the molds 3 times over! When these were first announced as a shared online exclusive I couldn't wait. While the dinosaur Mini-Con molds may not have the best robot modes, the dino modes are quite fun. I still can't believe it took Hasbro this long to release these toys in G1 Dinobot colors. The inclusion of Catilla is a little puzzling, but I'll take it.
I can't say I'm too surprised that Hasbro chose to release these toys under the current Dark of the Moon (DOTM) banner. The packaging is really nice as it uses the Legion Class Cyberverse style. If you can get past the names you can see miniature versions of Grimlock, Swoop and Slag. 2 of the 3 names were just used in Animated so I'm surprised to see Hasbro didn't use the classic G1 names here. At least Catilla shares the name with the G1 Pretender big cat, Catilla.
Dualor, or Grimlock if you will is the best of the bunch in my opinion. The paint apps on the figure are really nice. I was surprised to see that all of these toys have the old Armada Mini-Con faction symbol tampographed on them. I really wish there was a back story on these guys, but unfortunately there isn't any information given for the character outside the individual rankings. I should point out the tail on mine wants to come off really easy. My guess is this mold is starting to show some wear as it's been used several times between the U.S. and Japan markets.
Rav, or Swoop is a great example of a great dino mode and a horrible robot mode. You can barely see the robot's face! The best thing going for this particular toy are the colors. G1 Swoop didn't have any gold, but it still looks good overall.
Triceradon, or Slag (or Snarl in Animated) also suffers from a crappy robot mode. The distance between the legs is just too much for me. He does appear to look strong with his wide upper body and fists. I'll be displaying him in dino mode.
Catilla, the "extra" figure as I see it. I like this toy. The beast mode is great and while the robot mode isn't the best it works for me. Normally I don't like it when robots have a animal head/mouth for a hand, but like Beast Wars Megatron it fits pretty good here. I like how the lower jaw is painted silver as well as the little cannon inside the mouth. Overall the use of the silver paint really helps break up the gold plastic and gives a better robotic look. I also love the square shaped head as it reminds me of the G1 Scramble City toys (Combaticons, Stunticons, Terrorcons, Protectobots, Aerialbots). I thought my favorite version of this toy was Snowcat, but I'd have to put Catilla up there at the top now.
The question at hand is should you buy them? For me the answer was easy for all the reasons I listed in the opening paragraph. $5.00 per figure may be a little pricey for what you get, but the colors are really nice and the G1 homage is probably enough to en tice some collector's to buy these even if they don't collect Mini-Cons. At the time of this posting you can grab the set via Amazon.com or Entertainment Earth for a little cheaper than what I paid so what are you waiting for?

Transformers DOTM: Cyberverse Powerglide
Bio:
Human pilots have traveled thousands of miles just to study the moves Powerglide executes in midair. His acrobatic aerial accomplishments impress all who see them - friend and enemy alike. His skill is the only thing that has kept him alive, since his light armr makes him a soft target for his Decepticon foes.
Strength: 5 Intelligence: 6 Speed: 9 Endurance: 4
Rank: 5 Courage: 10 Fireblast: 3 Skill: 10
Going into this year I said I wasn't going to buy many Dark of the Moon (DOTM) toys since I've learned my lesson with the movie toys from the first two live action Transformers movies. However when I saw early pictures of Powerglide surface in China I knew that was one figure I wanted. Does this new version of Powerglide warrant a purchase? Could he fit into your Classics/Generations collection? Read on.
Powerglide is part of the new Cyberverse subline of DOTM toys and is part of the Commander class. Cyberverse has basically taken over the Legends scale with a few additions. Commander class figures are larger than the basic Cyberverse figure. They also feature a great deal more detail and a more involved transformation versus the basic toys. I'd say the Commander figures are just shy of sharing the same size as the basic/scout class toys.
One of the first things you may notice is the dark burgundy plastic. It fits the toy really well as it gives the figure a darker more serious look. You should also be able to see right off the bat all of the mechanical detail. To be honest I didn't expect these figures to have the level of detail as such.
I'm happy to report that at least with Powerglide the Commander class figures do have a bit of articulation. The removable weapons are the icing on the cake...at least for me. I was also bummed the minibots from G1 didn't come with weapons of any sort (Outback excluded). The shoulders are ball and socket joints and they provide a full 360 range of motion. They will pop off if too much pressure is exerted on the joints, but they easily pop right back on. The hips and knees are the same type of ball and socket joint. The weapon that Powerglide is holding is actually two separate pieces that snap together to form a hand gun of sorts. Nice touch Hasbro!
After freeing Powerglide from his cardboard and plastic prison and seeing all of the various armaments I was surprised to see his technical ratings for Firepower (sorry, I refuse to refer to this category as Fireblast as the packaging now reads) at only a 3. There are a total of 7 missiles under the wings to compliment the gatling gun underneath the nose of the plane. What kind of weaponry do you have to equip to get a higher Firepower ranking Hasbro?! Granted the ranking is more in line with his Generation 1 levels, it just doesn't measure up for me.
There aren't a lot of paint applications on the toy as most of the parts are either molded in burgundy or a silver gray plastic, but as you can see there is a little silver paint applied to the edges of the wings. The same silver is used for the Autobot emblems on the wings as well as a silver pin stripe down the sides of the turbines and tail wings. Here in his A-10 Thunderbolt mode you can see the level of detail by the likes of the various metal panels and even rivets.
Flip the jet over and you can see Hasbro did a great job at concealing the robot bits. Just about all of the robotic parts are hidden in one way or another. The missile attachments attach to the wing by the way of a small rectangular peg hole. Each missile pod also features a side peg that you can peg into a hole on the side of the forearm piece. There is retractable landing gear with was surprise and welcomed feature.
Comparison time! The new Cyberverse Powerglide stands just a bit taller than his G1 self. His arms aren't as ape like either. If you look closely at the face you can see they retained the mouth plate...something I'm glad they did.
I can't say enough good things about this toy. It's a near perfect upgrade for a classic G1 minibot. The only gripe that I can come up with is that when in vehicle mode the jet is top heavy in the rear. Even with the landing gear deployed the back of the jet is so heavy that it drags the nose up into the air ever so slightly. It's not a huge drawback, but I do wish there was some way to remedy this. If someone knows please comment and pass along your pointer.
In closing this is a solid toy. At first glance you may wonder if a glorified legends toy is work eight bucks when for 2 bucks more you can buy a full on deluxe size figure, but don't let the diminutive size fool you. The toy as a lot to offer. From the level of detail to the articulation this is a fun toy. The transformation is very clever, but not as frustrating as some of the Revenge of the Fallen toys were. I'm starting to see now why so many other collectors are praising the Cyberverse toys. I may have to reconsider my stance on some of these DOTM toys and at least give another Cyberverse figure a try. In my opinion this toy is a must buy. If you're not into the whole movie scene Powerglide will still fit into your Classics/Generations collection just fine. At least he is in scale more with the other Autobots than the earlier released Ultra class toy.
